Social change happens every day. Social change is the way we change institutions, behaviors, and social relations to meet today’s needs. Over time, it profoundly impacts society. Schools must deal with the changes that occur and prepare students to initiate changes. Therefore, teachers face challenges in the classroom. As written by John Dewey, “Education is not a preparation for life but is life itself.” Dewey also reflected on education as a healthy, evolving democratic society that initiates social change.

Much debate about policy in schools continues today. Therefore, teachers build their classrooms with healthy society changes in mind.  This happens with the help of the students and the creative insight of teachers.

Social Change Process in School

Memorization of facts, definitions, and dates is no longer acceptable. Classroom learning moves toward active learning lessons. Consequently, students engage in problem-based and constructivist learning. They engage in learning that includes experimentation with creative thoughts and ideas. In addition, they engage in peer teaching and questioning. Therefore, they rethink many ideas and assumptions that exist today. This process helps students see the need for change and have the fortitude to take positive steps to benefit society.

Change and Students

Changes occur in society and schools must deal with the changes. Teachers and students must change from traditional ideas and deal with dress codes and the latest styles, gender-related issues, and creating diverse learning teams. Hence, students and teachers of all races and socio-economic backgrounds come together to educate and be educated. Schools must be willing to give up traditional thoughts and methods in order to create a learning environment that enables students to build a future. Educators must draw direct connections to real-world issues. Several issues include climate change, health care, violence, homelessness, education, sustainability, and education.

The classroom is a perfect venue to promote and develop new ideas. Educators develop students to think critically, collaborate, and self-reflect on the learning to foster social change for a better society.
