Remote learning can be a challenge especially if there are multiple students in a household. It may have a toll on some students. However, other students find freedom and no stress in this type of learning. They enjoy working at a pace and time that suits their style. However, the students that enjoy the social aspects of school may not be happy. Which in turn, the learning is not as effective as in the classroom.

Remote Learning Positives and Negatives

Distance learning is only as effective as the time and effort put in by the student and parent. However, the are many other factors that determine its effectiveness. Some students find a challenge with remote learning.  Others struggle to understand the work. Also, the strength or weakness of the internet leads to frustration.  As some recordings take time to load, students get frustrated. Thus, students are distracted.

Lack of knowledge of the computer is a disadvantage to a young student.  Also, the student that reads slowly is at a disadvantage with remote learning. Thus, the remote learning caused by the pandemic will not develop high-quality online education.  It is difficult for schools to plan immediately for a crisis. Additionally, the administration must help and guide teachers through a different teaching modality. Educators must support students through this crisis, focus on engagement, flexibility, and still be compassionate with the level of understanding of each student. Thus, most work is a ‘one-size-fits-all’ plan.

Special Needs

Many students rely on the services that only brick-and-mortar schools provide. They need counselors and special needs teachers. Also, many students rely on meals that brick-and-mortar schools provide. Students that receive special education services are susceptible to losing previously learned skills. However, they are entitled to an IEP meeting to determine the academic process. Still, remote learning for special needs students is unchartered territory.   They are the hardest students to teach virtually or remotely.

Due to today’s need for the immediate creation of remote learning. There is no immediate proof of its academic effectiveness on today’s students. Thus, everyone hopes for the best.
